Does any of this sound familiar?

Most subcontractors we speak to have at least one of these problems. All of them are fixable.

  • You don't fully understand how CIS deductions work or how they affect your tax
  • You're not sure how much tax you owe — and you dread the bill arriving
  • Your accountant only contacts you once a year at filing time
  • You think you might be overpaying tax but don't know how to check
  • Your records are disorganised and you lose track of expenses
  • You're not confident your deductions are being properly offset

How CIS deductions actually work

CIS is not extra tax — it's a prepayment. Here's what that means for you.

20%

Standard Rate

The standard CIS deduction rate for registered subcontractors. This is the most common.

30%

Higher Rate

Applied to unregistered subcontractors. If you're being deducted at 30%, contact us immediately.

0%

Gross Status

Eligible subcontractors can apply for gross payment status — meaning no deductions are made.

See how CIS works in practice

Here's a typical month for a CIS subcontractor — and how we make sure you're not losing out.

Monthly CIS Example

Gross income from contractors£8,000
CIS deducted at 20%£1,600
Net received into bank£6,400
Allowable expenses (van, tools, gear)£400
Net profit before tax£6,000
Corporation tax due (~19%)£1,140
CIS already deducted (credit)£1,600
Refund due at year end£460

This is why tracking CIS properly matters. Without it, you could miss a £460 refund — and that's just one month.

CIS questions answered

What is CIS and do I need to register?
CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) is an HMRC scheme where contractors deduct tax from your payments before paying you. If you're working as a subcontractor in construction, you should be registered. We can advise on this during your free consultation.
Can I get a refund of CIS deductions?
Yes — if more CIS tax has been deducted than your actual tax liability, you're entitled to a refund. This is very common and something we actively identify for all our construction clients.
I've been deducted at 30% — is that right?
A 30% deduction rate means you're not registered with HMRC as a subcontractor. This means you're paying more tax than necessary. We can help you get registered and reduce this to the standard 20% rate.
Do I need to be a limited company to use your service?
No — we work with both sole traders and limited companies. Whatever your setup, we can help you get organised and stay compliant.
My records are a mess. Can you still help?
Absolutely — this is one of the most common situations we deal with. We'll work through what you have, get things up to date, and put a system in place going forward.
